Henry Blooms Cholesterol Balance Beta-Glucan Powder contains 22% betaglucan which is 700% the betaglucan content of plain oats. Betaglucan is a concentrated, highly beneficial soluble fibre from the oat grain that forms a gel and binds to cholesterol inside the intestinal tract. Henry Blooms Cholesterol Balance Beta-Glucan Powder is sourced from Scandinavia, where different varieties that are unique to their climatic conditions can be grown. These varieties are higher in molecular weight than regular oats, which is more desired as it is important for gel formation to mop up excess cholesterol.
The beta-glucan in these varieties is up to 6 times higher in molecular weight than regular oats and this means it forms a much thicker gel in the gut. It’s this thickness or viscosity that makes it more effective in binding with bile acid and reducing cholesterol. This same viscous gel creates a layer on the intestinal wall to delay the uptake of carbohydrates resulting in a lowered blood glucose curve after meals.
Oral intake of Henry Blooms Cholesterol Balance Beta-Glucan Powder forms a gel inside the stomach and small intestine. This gel entraps bile acids reducing their absorption. As cholesterol is used to make bile acids, when levels drop, the body has to use more cholesterol to form more bile acids. This is the primary mechanism used by the body to remove excess cholesterol.
This process results in a lower LDL cholesterol level and a lower total cholesterol level. A diet low in saturated fat and containing 3 g of Beta-glucan per day can reduce blood cholesterol and reduce dietary and biliary (liver) cholesterol absorption.
Scientific research into the effects of Beta-glucan show an overall lowering of “bad” LDL cholesterol by around 10%. The cholesterol lowering effect of Beta-glucan has been demonstrated by a large number of studies over a number of years.
